Do spare tires have Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) devices installed?
Because spare tires operate at a much higher air pressure (or PSI), your vehicle's system will not monitor spare tire pressure.
- Spare tires lack TPMS sensors and are not mandated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. There are several reasons for this.
- Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) in vehicles are not standardized among manufacturers. In other words, each manufacturer may have its own unique and proprietary system. This makes it very difficult to add a compatible TPMS device to a spare.
- Even if these systems were more standardized among vehicle manufacturers, they would typically monitor air pressure within a specific PSI range across all four tires. Since spare tires operate at a significantly higher PSI, the systems may struggle to identify the spare.
- Spare tires are meant for short-term use and are not designed as long-term replacements for regular tires.
