Do Spare Tires Have TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) Devices Installed?
Because spare tires operate at a much higher air pressure (or PSI), your vehicle's system will not monitor spare tire pressure.
- Spare tires do not have TPMS sensors and are not required under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. There are several reasons for this.
- Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems in vehicles are not standardized across vehicle manufacturers. In other words, each manufacturer may have a system that is unique and proprietary. This would make adding a compatible TPMS device to a spare very difficult.
- Even if these systems were more standardized across vehicle manufacturers, they would generally only monitor air pressure within a certain PSI range across all four tires. Because spare tires operate at a much higher PSI, the systems may be unable to distinguish the spare.
- Spare tires are intended for short-term temporary use and are not intended as long-term replacements for regular tires.
